Civil War Monument

Main Street from the Liberty Pole to the Civil War monument was a blaze of color with a profession of flags, banners, and streamers strung across the thoroughfare, and electric light poles decorated with national colors. Merchants were also decorating their shop windows in preparation for Old Home Week, to celebrate the Sesquicentennial of American Independence and commemorate the 150th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence. Old Home Week was scheduled to begin on Monday, June 28 and continue until July 5.

The students of the Academy of the Sacred Heart of Mary had an enjoyable afternoon at commencement exercises at the academy hall on Sunday, June 20. The Reverend Father Waters of St. Andrew’s Church delivered the address to the graduates. His remarks were brief, to the point, packed with common sense and eloquent in their simplicity. He also bestowed diplomas and gold medals to the grammar school and high school graduates. The Masonic Club gave a dinner to the members of the cast of the Barbary Pirates at Lily Pond House on Thursday, June 17. Covers were laid for 90 guests. It was a cosmopolitan crowd, with members of high school and college mixing with the younger married set. The dining room was decorated with June flowers with roses at each table. The dinner was most daintily served, and each dish was the height of perfection.
