From Sea to Shining Sea: Whalers of the African Diaspora

From Sea to Shining Sea: Whalers of the African Diaspora is a collaborative exhibition being presented in partnership with Sag Harbor’s Eastville Community Historical Society and its executive director and chief curator, Dr. Georgette Grier-Key. The exhibit opens on Saturday, July 25 and will run until September 6, 2026.

The maritime industry—including whaling—was among early America’s most diverse industries. Sag Harbor’s population has long reflected that rich heritage and continues to embody that diversity and cultural legacy to this day. Through historic artifacts, contemporary artwork, and interpretive displays, From Sea to Shining Sea explores and highlights the often-overlooked experiences, contributions, and impact of African Americans on the whaling industry.
