Most everyone has encountered some version of Frankenstein through the many film versions and adaptations that proliferate in popular culture. From Halloween costumes, to cookies, to footwear and cocktails, some image of the monster is deeply rooted in our collective psyche. But how many have actually read the novel, Frankenstein or The Modern Prometheus by Mary Shelley? Published in 1881, the book centers on the scientist Victor Frankenstein and the creature he creates through the spark of electricity. What follows the experiment is one of the most famous and moving horror stories in world literature.
